Columbus has several notable bakeries scattered about the city, some specializing in pasty (Pistachia Vera) and others; cakes (Pattycake) or bread. The latter of which being dominated by (in my opinion) three main sources: Omega, Elena Christina, and Dan the Baker.

Sure Omega pumps out gorgeous loaves of  bread daily, and Elena Christina provides amazing bread to some of the most upscale restaurants in the Short North. But does the bread at omega warrant the lengthy weight without grabbing a butter cranberry scone too? Does Elena Christina have the forgiving hours of a true store front?

Dan the Baker is a genius when it comes to artisan bread baking.

Dan, a slightly quirky super professional, crafts his old world European style breads from wild-harvested yeasts, and the best of locally sourced ingredients. When visiting the oddly placed bakeshop, you will be greeted with calm friendly blue walls, warm wood accents and a view straight into a flour dusted workroom. Although you can purchase all of Dan's breads and pastries here, you can also purchase his bread at many local farmer's markets, specialty markets (Clintonville Community Market, Hill's Markets) as well as several restaurants such as Mouton, Katzinger's, and Skillet.

Where Dan clearly excels in creating breads, his pastries are destined to please as well. The typical offering of chocolate croissants, and scones are available, but clearly not the focus of the menu. During the holiday season, pies and tarts were more available for purchase, and if Dan continues to grow, I'm sure he will offer more of these (and hopefully some new things of his own design) regularly.

I highly recommend ordering some of his bread if you are out and come across it on the menu, you will not be disappointed. You can also go to the shop and enjoy an espresso or a nice glass of tea while you pick out a loaf for dinner. Enjoy your visit, but get ready to head to another bakery to pick up dessert.

Keep Eating,
JTFussy
